Is it safe to follow a low-carb or ketogenic diet during pregnancy?

Conventional advice during the last decades has been to eat large amounts of carbs throughout the day, yet this has not helped to stave off increasing rates of diet-related conditions like gestational diabetes and childhood obesity. So perhaps it is the other way around; that low carb is a safer option, and that more risks are associated with eating a diet rich in carbs.
